At the invitation of the Chinese Cultural Centre, and in collaboration with the Zhejiang Art Museum, four of our school’s art students took part in a cultural exchange visit to Hangzhou, China, between the 13th and 19th of October 2025. The participating students – Catriona Muscat, Kaya Curmi, Alyssia Caruana Cachia, and Mikaela Borg – were prize winners in the annual China Cultural Centre Art Competition and Exhibition.
The 2025 theme, “Nihao China… Exploring Zhejiang on a Maltese Luzzu”, invited Year 7 to Year 10 students from both state and non-state schools across Malta and Gozo to embark on an imaginative artistic journey. The winning artworks were exhibited alongside those of Chinese students at one of China’s principal state museums, the Zhejiang Art Museum in Hangzhou. The joint exhibition, “Voyage of Art”, was inaugurated on 16th September 2025 in the presence of the Maltese Ambassador, Mr John Busuttil and other distinguished guests. While Maltese students interpreted Zhejiang through the eyes of a traditional luzzu, their Chinese counterparts explored the Maltese islands onboard a Zhejiang Boat.
The Maltese delegation also included our school’s art teacher, Mr Donald Camilleri, Art Education Officer Dr Charmaine Zammit, and Dr Alice Micallef, Director for Early Years, Languages and Humanities at the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation. Alongside the students, they visited cultural museums, the Leifeng Pagoda, the West Lake show, the picturesque water town of Wuzhen, and other iconic landmarks in the region. The group also visited a local school in Hangzhou, where they engaged in collaborative art activities with fellow Chinese students and their educators.
The highlight of the programme was the official opening of “Voyage of Art” at the Zhejiang Art Museum. This provided an invaluable opportunity for Maltese students to meet their Chinese counterparts, exchange ideas, appreciate the exhibited works and learn about the richness of traditional and contemporary Chinese art.
This memorable experience highlights the role of Art in connecting cultures, fostering mutual understanding and building lasting friendships across great distances.
