The MVPA’s Experience with Progetto Giovani
As written by Mr Jonathan McBee, teacher of English at the MVPA and member of the ErasmusPlus team.
During our visit to Padova in November 2022, as part of the Erasmus+ project, we had the enlightening experience of engaging with the dynamic initiative known as Progetto Giovani. Originating from the office of the Cabinet of the Mayor of the Municipality of Padua, Progetto Giovani focuses on providing a myriad of services, initiatives, and activities tailored for young individuals aged between 15 to 35. Among its diverse objectives, the initiative aims to equip young minds with professional, cultural, and civic education while also fostering environments for sociability, aggregation, and cultural study through various events such as courses, seminars, and meetings. Furthermore, their commitment to maintaining collaborative efforts with different organizations, including non-profit groups, educational institutions, and more, stands testament to their dedication to keeping an open dialogue with the local community.
One of the standout lessons from our interaction was the profound realization of the importance of community engagement in fostering the arts. In Padova, there is an immense emphasis on ensuring that the extended community actively partakes in nurturing and supporting artists. By organizing multiple contests and initiating programs, they provide young artists with invaluable opportunities to gain exposure, as well as equipping them with essential resources such as workspaces and funds for materials. This communal support system not only bolsters individual artistic journeys but also strengthens the fabric of the community by celebrating creativity and innovation.
A particularly commendable effort by Progetto Giovani is their proactive approach in creating a symbiotic network that connects artists, government representatives, and business owners. Recognizing the multidimensional value of art, they facilitate dialogues and collaborations among these diverse stakeholders, each of whom benefits from the thriving arts scene in Padova. Artists get platforms and patrons, government representatives see the cultural and aesthetic enrichment of their city, and business owners enjoy the economic boost and brand enhancement that comes from associating with art initiatives. It’s a holistic approach that ensures the arts are not just consumed but also integrated into the very fabric of the city’s economic, cultural, and civic life.
Drawing parallels to our own circumstances, it becomes evident that as an educational institution, we could consider forging a stronger alliance with our local council in Hamrun. While our school, MVPA, has commendably established collaborations through various performances with numerous entities, there’s always room to further intensify these connections. By emulating the example set by Padova’s community-driven initiatives, we can fortify our commitment to the arts and ensure that our young artists receive the support, exposure, and resources they so rightly deserve.
One pivotal insight we gleaned during our time in Padova, which resonated particularly on the first day of lessons, was the need to reshape societal perceptions of the arts. Often, artistic pursuits are dismissed as luxuries or mere pastimes, detached from the “practical” facets of life. The Progetto Giovani team, with their unwavering dedication and passion, is actively countering this narrative. Through every project they undertake, they challenge these misconceptions, reaffirming the value and significance of artistic endeavors.
Post their compelling presentation, the Progetto Giovani team offered us a guided tour around their premises. We were particularly struck by the innovative residency program they have established. The premises house a rotating group of young artists who are offered residence for a certain duration. In exchange for this unique opportunity, these artists contribute artworks to be placed strategically around the city. Such an initiative not only nurtures young talent by providing them a conducive environment to hone their skills but also beautifies the city, creating a symbiotic relationship between the artists and the community.
Changing ingrained cultural perceptions is no easy task, but the Progetto Giovani staff’s efforts stand as a beacon of inspiration. It reminds us of the importance of persistently advocating for the arts, highlighting their role not just as a source of beauty and expression but as integral components of personal and societal development. As we’ve observed, having the backing of the entire community can work wonders for nurturing and showcasing talent, and it’s a path we are excited to explore further.
